Zanzibar's history goes back in pre- 10th century and has always been associated with the Slave trade. It is famous for its abundance of cloves and spices. It lies 200 Kms from Tanzania with two islands Pemba and Unguja. Zanzibar is a peaceful island with fascinating history. While in Zanzibar, do not miss to visit the Stone Town with superb Arab doors and very few cars. A guided walking tour is highly recommended. On the Eastern side are the beautiful beaches and friendly welcoming people who make the east coast a perfect quiet getaway.
STONE TOWN TOUR (3 Hours)
The city of Zanzibar is referred to as Stone Town. The three hour guided tour includes City market, a century old Anglican church, National museum, Forodhani gardens, the Arab Fort(1700 century) and the interesting shops on the narrow streets. The tour ends at Livingstone.
JOZANI FOREST
After a drive of half an hour from the City center, spend about two hours walking through the nature trails of this tropical rain forest. The guide will point out some of the interesting vegetation, birds and smaller animals seen along the route.
PRISON ISLAND
Daily 4 hours
For a relaxing break from the city, take a native dhow to Changu Island, nicknamed Prison Island because of its use by Arab slave traders for the confinement of slaves. Apart from the 1893 built goal that still stands, there are giant tortoise on the Island. One can swim, snorkel and sunbathe.
SPICE GARDEN TOUR
Daily 4 hours
This guided tour begins in Kibweni palace( Sultan's Rest House) to view the Persian Baths built in 1850. Then on to Kizimbani to visit the spice plantation with a variety of spices such as Cardamon, cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg and naturally cloves. Other exciting plants are henna bush, perfume tree and lipstick tree.
